Description:
Emergence of Adaptive Immunity: The Answer to Everything
Adaptive immunity in jawed vertebrates (Gnathostomes) is centered on Ig, TCR, and the MHC, as well as RAG-mediated VDJ recombination, AID-mediated somatic hypermutation, and responses initiated in secondary lymphoid tissues. All of these characteristics are present in the oldest living gnathostomes, the sharks. Interestingly, our data would argue that Ig, TCR, and MHC are derived from a primordial genetic region that can be followed by examining genome-wide duplications early in the history of the vertebrates.
