IBBR Participates in Summer 2016 National Student Leadership Conference

The Institute for Bioscience and Biotechnology Research (IBBR) is participating in the Summer 2016 National Student Leadership Conference held at American University.  A select team of high school students from around the country and abroad, who are interested in science, technology, engineering and math (S.T.E.M.), -- specifically biotechnology, are visiting  IBBR’s Shady Grove facility on July 14 and 26.  The students will tour IBBR’s advanced research labs, conduct hands-on experiments, and learn from award-winning scientists.  IBBR’s participation enables students to explore and discover what it takes to have a successful career in the cutting-edge field of science and technology.

“It is vital to IBBR’s mission of conducting groundbreaking scientific research, as well as research being conducted all over the world, that we encourage and motivate students to enter the S.T.E.M. workforce,” said Thomas Fuerst, Ph.D., IBBR Director and Professor, University of Maryland, Department of Cell Biology and Molecular Genetics.  “We must ensure that tomorrow’s workforce is trained and prepared to meet the challenges in biotechnology that can translate into major medical and public health benefits, such as in the development of safe and effective vaccines, therapeutics, and drug delivery technologies, that will help keep our Nation at the forefront in science and engineering for many years to come.”
