IBBR Congratulates Kyle Sexton on Successfully Defending His PhD Dissertation

IBBR proudly congratulates Kyle Sexton for successfully defending his PhD dissertation on “Characterization of the role of AMSH1 in Arabidopsis nonhost resistance and basal resistance against powdery mildews” on July 21, 2026. Kyle has completed his coursework, dissertation and fulfilled the requirements for the doctoral degree.
His research, done under Dr. Shunyuan Xiao (IBBR Fellow and Professor in the Department of Plant Sciences and Landscape Architecture at UMD), investigates how an ESCRT (Endosomal Sorting Complex Required for Transport) machinery associated deubiquitinase (ASMH1) contributes to plant defense against adapted and non-adapted but potential fungal pathogens that cause powdery mildew diseases in plant species. The findings in the dissertation help elucidate a key mechanism by which plant immunity proteins are regulated through ubiquitination and deubiquitination associated with the ESCRT machinery. This research will not only advance our understanding of the multilayered plant immune system but also provide new strategies for enhancing crop resistance to pathogens.
