Maria Ansar, an undergraduate student at the University of Maryland, was awarded a Howard Hughes Undergraduate Research Fellowship (HHMI). Ms. Ansar, who is an honors student in the Department of Cell Biology and Molecular Genetics, is working on her honors thesis in the lab of Dr. Silvia Muro, Assistant Professor at the University of Maryland Institute of Bioscience and Biotechnology Research (IBBR) and the Fischell Department of Bioengineering. Dr. James Culver Awarded NSF Funding to Study How Viruses Reprogram Phloem Specific Tissues


Dr. James Culver, Professor at the University of Maryland Institute of Bioscience and Biotechnology Research (IBBR) and Department of Plant Sciences and Landscape Architecture, has recently been awarded funding from the National Science Foundation to study how viruses reprogram phloem specific tissues to mediate their long distance transport. IBBR Researchers Develop Procedure for Screening Microbes for Broad-Spectrum Antibiotics Resistance


Research from the laboratories of Drs. Shuwei Li (UM IBBR/CHEM&BCHM) and Daniel Nelson (UM IBBR/VETMED) has led to the development of a quick and sensitive procedure for screening microbes that are resistant to certain broad-spectrum antibiotics. Graduate Student Robert Berkey Poster Places Among Top 5 Winners


Molecular and Cellular Biology (MOCB) graduate student Robert Berkey, from the laboratory of Dr. Shunyuan Xiao (IBBR and PLSA) has placed among the top 5 winners of the UM College of Agriculture and Natural Resources (AGNR) 2011 Open House Poster Competition. The poster entitled " Engineering Novel Plant Disease Resistance against Fungal Pathogens " was selected from a pool of high quality posters and the top five were awarded a prize of $100. Bringing Next-Generation Sequencing Technology to the UM Research Community


The Institute for Bioscience and Biotechnology Research (IBBR) is expanding its core services to include high throughput sequencing, based on the recent purchase of an Illumina HiSeq 1000 instrument plus supporting equipment. The instrument is located in the IBBR DNA Sequencing Facility on the 5th floor of the Plant Sciences Building on the College Park campus, which has offered Sanger sequencing for many years.
